GAINAX is known for doing some off-the-wall things, but occasionally they make normal stuff. When I started this show, I expected exactly what I got, and that is why I had to drop it.
We all bitch about shows that have whiny protags, Yuji-like betas, and harem kings, but very rarely do I see people bitch about Mary-Sue female leads and their inability to do no wrong. The exception, to my knowledge, is Lacus Clyne from Gundam SEED who has been ripped apart and analyzed more than my sex life. Medaka is this show’s token Mary-Sue, and that in itself wouldn’t be bad except they surrounded her with just the worst cast of characters you could ask for. Two blond guys who are obviously in love with her, but can’t make that move for whatever reason (including her friend-zoning them) and rival each other to pass the time, and a girl who is hard up for cash to offset the fact she grew up poor. Add a girl with a monsterous appetite and a penchant for stating the obvious (she’s actually the only GOOD character in the show) and a random cast of other rejects, and you have a school comedy that is pretty much a monster-of-the-week dressed up as something more fun.
I also probably should point out that the second (or third) reason for dropping this is that it reeks of the last show I dropped, SKET Dance. I don’t know if this show intends to go past 50 episodes or not, but that’s a sure sign that the status quo will remain throughout the show. The other nasty thing is, if I read the manga cues and other stuff correctly, they are going to introduce some power-level bullshit into it pretty soon, and I can’t have that.
So yeah, I’m cutting this loose now, and reducing my weekly trawl to sixteen shows instead of seventeen. Man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do.
