Quick Stat: Winter Anime Rundown

With two weeks in, I’d thought I’d throw out a quickie post with my overall impressions of this season ranked accordingly.

  1. Dog Days”
  2. It’s Dog Days, really. It’s American Gladiators: The Anime with furries, and cute furries at that. This season seems like it will focus on demons and dragons and less on inter-continental sports, but as long as the major players, and Yuki, remain on the scene, it’ll stay on top of my list.

  3. Log Horizon
  4. The peek into the names and faces of Debauchery Tea Party, and whats-her-name from the end of season one, hopefully means some good shit is dropping for the last half of this season. This season has been pretty good so-far, but I feel like they’re holding back a bit.

  5. Shinmai Maou no Testament
  6. Shows often go after Highschool DxD’s title of “Most Strategic Lewd Content Per Second” but few achieve it. Shinmai may just come close, but lewd aside, it does remain mildly interesting plot-wise.

  7. KanColle
  8. Ship girls doing ship things. I’m green on the source material, but based on my interest in previous naval and aerial girl shows, I don’t think I will be disappointed in what they give me here.

  9. Cross Ange
  10. The Fukuda Power Hour still gives no fucks about taking every terrible idea from SEED/Destiny to concoct this wank-fest, but damn if it isn’t pretty fucking entertaining to say the least. I have a feeling the second half here is just going to slide into a pool of shit, unless Julio survives and becomes BIG BAD.

  11. Junketsu no Maria
  12. Decent visuals, decent story, decent characters. Its ranking can only be dropped if it just stalls on itself in the next few episodes.

  13. Koufuku Graffiti
  14. It’s food, and I like food, especially lewd food. I’m banking on it scoring points for consistency through the season.

  15. Seiken Tsukai no World Break
  16. It’s a bit campy, and riding the bro/sis-con or girl-next-door trope that Mahouka ruined for me, but it has some promise plot-wise.

  17. Rolling☆Girls
  18. I don’t really know what is going on, is this Kill la Kill On Wheels, or Sons of Anarchy: Moe Edition. Gonna start needing some answers soon. Visuals are okay though.

  19. Aldnoah.Zero
  20. There really isn’t much to expect from the Jesus Inaho Power Hour, especially since the show is likely going to discard any forward momentum from the first season and spend most of the second doing the same Aldnoah Redshirt of the Week. It’s hard to take seriously a show that doesn’t take itself seriously. In it for the trainwreck though.

  21. Absolute Duo
  22. There really are too many of these magic/weapon/dragon/??? schooldays shows out there, and this one just seems to be an exercise in meek characters and indirect fanservice. We’ll see where it does.

  23. Saenai Heroine no Sodatekata
  24. I was not a fan of Ore no Kanojo to Osananajimi ga Shuraba Sugiru in the slightest:

I know, I should be programmed by the Moevolution to accept these shows and embrace them, but maybe its an overload of the concept or just poorly written characters, but this iteration of Generic Harem Blackmail Delusional BEST GIRL Anime #420382892 just did not grab me, especially in the first half.

I can’t see this show getting any better, and about the only reason to keep watching is the hilarious meta-commentary about being an anime blogger or game developer.

  25. Yuri Kuma Arashi
  26. What the fuck is this shit? No, seriously, can anyone tell me what is going on? I’ve watched two episodes, and as best as I can tell, I am stuck in some sort of purgatory forced to watch a hybrid of Mawaru Penguindrum and any Monogatari series. At least Sakura Trick made sense.

  27. Juuou Mujin no Fafnir
  28. Mahouka, all over again. Currently on-notice.

  29. Isuca
  30. Hasn’t aired, so nothing to say yet.

I might be looking to replace a couple entries with other shows from this season, need to read up on some. Or, maybe re-watch some old stuff and do some retro reviews. I don’t think I ever finished Outlaw Star, but I am itching for a re-watch of Stellvia. Decisions!
