Well, here is the new season, and from the get-go, it’s pretty flashy. As first weeks go, they tend not to disappoint, but going from there, that is the tricky part. Taking a first look tonight is Cross Ange, Log Horizon 2, Terra Formars, and Madan no Ou to Vandis. I’ll cover more in another post.
Terra Formars
“This season on Mars, cockroaches.”
Imagine if you will, Terminix, in space, thousands of years in the future, battling giant cockroaches. On Mars. Pretty absurd, right?
The first thing that struck me about this show was the design. It reminded me a lot of Claymore. Sure enough, Hamasaki Hiroshi’s name is on it, so that zoned me in on what to expect from this show, a lot of people dying, in seemingly horrible ways. Granted he was only involved in storyboarding, even the plots tend to equal out somewhat, in that humanity made a big mistake, and it’s coming back to kill them violently. A lot of these first two episodes confused me a bit, because they kept jumping around as they did their fast-forward through months of the story to get to Mars, and by get to I naturally mean “Fuck, we got BUGS on our ship and we haven’t even landed!”
It’s the sort of sci-fi thriller you might’ve expected out of an 80’s B-roll Hollywood film that ends up on Mystery Science Theater 3000. So in that regard, grab your robot pals, and star riffing.

“If you can’t use magic, I feel bad for you girl, I got ninety-nine problems, and an enema is one.”
My, my, Sunrise has certainly reminded us how cruel and tragic it is willing to go for to remain relevant in entertainment.

Oh right, we’ve seen this before. Angry Shinn Asuka and the Eternal Torment Parade. Oh, but this show can’t possibly have Fukuda at the helm…

I will say, that all SEED Destiny references aside, Cross Ange does look proper good, I mean, they at least didn’t let us sit and languish on the fact the princess was never a magic user, especially after her several-minute introduction on the motochangingsuperrobotthing that looks like we’re crossing Rinne no Lagrange with Gundam or something. Everything else looks sharp from the Sunrise perspective, so really, this can either be pretty awesome, or go into the pile of unwanted shame like the last few have. Shine on, you crazy motherfucking diamonds.

“Living in the database seems to cost as much as Silicon Valley.”
It’s about damn time Log Horizon came back to the airwaves, and none-too-soon. I might have to go back and re-watch the last quarter to remind myself of what happened, but the first episode opens in an anticlimactic way: Buildings cost money. I could not recall if they mentioned in the first season that there was an upkeep charge, but apparently there is now, and this of course means Shiroe is locked in another KEKAKU DOORI to become Rich Uncle Pennybags and rob the banker blind, some clan of NPCs, players? Forget.
All I know is, this will be my staple show for the season. Well, that and MANY CHAIKAS. SO WHITE. WOW.

“Robin Hood: Man, It’s Tight”
If I hadn’t been reading/watching Esdeath in Akame ga Kill this might be more interesting, but since I am, it’s arguably less interesting. Still, seems like we got a skilled archer and a BATTLESHIP maiden, potentially teaming up to do whatever it is an archer and iron maiden do. It looks to be angling itself as a romcom and action series in one shot, but the character designs look okay, and it seems to promise some interesting characters, so I’m willing to stick it out a little more to see what happens.

More shows to come. This week has at least five more dropping I think. Question is, will anything be dropped on week one or two? This season best not disappiont.
