Symphogear GX Talk #002 – The Heart of Darkness

We’re halfway through the season, and we’re now seeing the results of Project Ignite, the fusing of Danslief pieces with the Gears to give them something that amounts to TRANS-AM powers for a limited time, enough to take on Carol and her Autoscorers. But will it be enough?

Maybe.
Maybe.

We’ve seen all of Carol’s lackeys run with the ball so far, testing the limits of the Gear users and breaking their gears, predictably, forcing them to be repaired and upgraded with the new Ignite Module. Kirika and Shirabe were the last to take the stage and attempt to fight, before too being bounced out by the last of the Autoscorers, Micha. Before they could be completely wiped out, Tsubasa and Chris show up in their newly re-minted Gears to begin the fight anew, but not before Carol herself shows up, and turns on her own surprises.

Syndrome-grade villain we have here, eh?
Syndrome-grade villain we have here, eh?

I’m not terribly surprised this is how the Ignite Module works, and might explain a thing or two about Hibiki and Gungnir’s relationship in the first two seasons. They never fully explained why Hibiki could go berserk beyond that of the fact it was embedded into her. Since they’ve determined Danslief isn’t whole, but in pieces, a piece of it could have very well found itself inside Hibiki previously and forced her to go through this fight before, which is probably why it is much easier for her to turn Ignite on versus the other two who took a little more time. Could also just be pure coincidence, but Hibiki has always been the wild card in this series, and it stands to reason she will no doubt likely end up facing true darkness through Ignite in the coming episodes, alluding to the title graphics and other images we’ve seen with the claw feet. Still, all three made pretty short work of Carol, though I am most certain this is not her final form, nor have we shaken off Hibiki’s cushy exterior. It’s always puzzled me how she manages to fight pretty seriously and kick serious ass, but hesitate so much after having gone through near-death experiences. I suppose that is her character, there has to be someone with unflappable integrity towards something ideal. I often use Nanoha as comparison here, but there have been so many similar cases before. It’s the every-man’s hero, or every-woman’s hero in this case. Tsubasa and Chris lovingly mock her, but they know without her they are just not a complete team.

Are they now?
Are they now?

As for Carol, I don’t really know where to pin her still. I am still not sure what the scope of her BIG BAD PLAN is. I can suspect from the whole sucking memories for power trick that she intends to use something that will suck everyone on the planet dry at the same time and then either destroy it or re-purpose it for something. I imagine Hibiki will punch her in the box before any of that can happen, but until then it just seems like she is playing around to delay the plot and allow the Gear users to get on her level before she’ll execute. I am sure it’s a Fine plan and all, but it lacks that Ver-like quality we miss Ver for from the second season. She may be more powerful, and more logically sane than Ver, but all her Autoscorers are making the faces for her.

At this point, I am waiting for Hibiki to wise up and start punching some bitches, Maria to finally not be useless, and all six of them to form the Megazord and save whatever is left of Angel Grove by the end of all this. I ain’t complaining though, this season has been almost non-stop fighting and action in every episode, as if they just said “Fuck it, we’ll do EVERYTHING LIVE!”

Play us out, Symphogear.
