Spring 2012 Prospects

Upcoming

Here is a quick list of what I am looking into for next season based on this chart courtesy of @animucharts Descriptions courtesy of MAL.

Confirmed
Saki: Achiga-hen
The Achiga Girls’ Academy in Nara once defeated regional mahjong powerhouse Bansei High School. It advanced into the national team semifinals but lost to the eventual champion, and the mahjong club was later disbanded. Six years later, elementary school student Shizuno Takakamo befriends transfer student Nodoka Haramura. The two eventually enter Achiga Girls’, but Nodoka transfers out of the school in the second year. When Shizuno sees Nodoka on television the following year as the national middle school individual mahjong champion, she decides to revive Achiga’s mahjong club.

I was hoping for the second season of Saki to be honest, but a side story is fine too.

Kore wa Zombie Desu ka? of the Dead
Aikawa Ayumu is a normal high school boy. One day he is killed by a serial killer and revived as a zombie by a necromancer named Eucliwood Hellscythe. He starts to serve Eu as her guard but he happens to deprive the mahou shoujo Haruna of her magic power. Haruna orders Ayumu to fight against the anti-mahou shoujo system “Megalo” in her place.

I honestly don’t give a shit if any of you didn’t like Korean Zombie Car S1, it was pretty damn cool and I’m going to be watching the second season. Haters gonna hate.

Prospective
Uchuu Kyoudai
One night in 2006, when they were young, the two brothers Mutta (born 1993) and Hibito (born 1996) saw what appeared to be a UFO heading for the moon. They decided that night to both become astronauts and travel out into space. In 2025, Hibito has become an astronaut, and he’s going to go to the moon. Mutta ended up following a more traditional career path with an auto development company. However, Mutta just ruined his career through a violent altercation with his boss. Now, not only has he lost his job, he appears to be blacklisted in the entire industry. Maybe this is a rare opportunity for Mutta to once again chase his childhood dream and become an astronaut like his little brother!

A1 did not do PLANETES, but they did do The Idolm@ster, Working!, and Fractale, so this has the potential to be good if the right cards are played. I always enjoy a good show about space, so we’ll see where this goes.

Upotte!!
A teacher is looking for a school by the name of Seishou Academy, as he is a new transfer teacher for that school. Seishou Academy is known for having students with excellent marksmanship. However, he gets lost along the way and decides to look for someone who knows where the school is at a summer festival. He encounters a girl at a shooting range and finds her marksmanship skills to be professional. The girl tells the new teacher that she is an assault rifle, not a student. Her name is FNC and is an assault rifle of Seishou Academy. The new teacher attends school the next day to find students, including FNC, practicing shooting M16s and realizes that he has come to an unbelievable school. How will his experience be at Seishou Academy?

For one, this is a XEBEC show, and I shouldn’t need to tell you what that means to me, but more importantly, this looks like Strike Witches meets Soul Eater in a manner of speaking, and that interests me the most. The character names seem to be gun models, so that might get annoying in conversational situations but I’m willing to roll with it.

Tasogare OtomexAmnesia
The story takes place in Seikyou Private School. A facility that consists of multiple buildings that connect together to accommodate both junior and senior high school students. Sixty years of ongoing renovations and expansions have meant most of the old inner structures have been sealed and abandoned. Classrooms turned into storage rooms, staircases no longer in use, hallways like dark alleys. With the existence of such a maze-like building, it is only natural that rumours of the paranormal would appear. One day first-year middle school student Teiichi Niiya gets lost in this maze and by chance arrives at an old storage room. This is where he meets Yuuko Kanoe, a mysterious girl with raven black, long silky hair and a tall and slender figure, who introduces herself as the ghost of the old school building. For some unexplainable reason Niiya is the only one able to see this spirit and she herself does not have any recollection of the reasons or time of her death, nor any lingering feelings about life itself. Curious about the circumstances of her death the two create a paranormal investigation club and seek to find out the truth about it and the many other mysteries surrounding the school.

Silver Link is pretty fresh, but you may know them for Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu, and C³ but this is being billed as a Supernatural Romance show with school elements, so it might be interesting to see what they can come up with based on the premise.

Sankarea
Furuya’s obsessed with zombies. He collects any figurines, watches any movie, and plays any game with the living dead, and is even only interested in zombie girls. When his cat dies, Furuya begins trying to raise it from the dead using an ancient book of the occult he bought from a shop. But what will happen when he sees the idol of a nearby all girl’s school walking close to where he conducts his experiment, wishing to die and be reborn as a different person?

It seems Studio DEEN has zombies on the brain (ha) this season as they roll with not only Korean Zombie Desk Car 2 but this show, which seems to be about zombies and alchemy, or something. The way I figure, we’ll either get something interesting, or a female anthropomorphic Schrodinger’s Cat.

Haiyore! Nyaruko-san
The story of Haiyore! Nyaruko-san centers around Nyaruko, a formless Cthulhu deity of chaos (Nyarlathotep) who can take on the shape of a seemingly ordinary silver-haired girl. Mahiro Yasaka is a normal high school boy who is chased by aliens one night, until Nyaruko saves him.

Another XEBEC entry this season involving Cthulhu it seems, and some aliens, I’m not sure, but it may have something to do with Haiyoru! Nyaruani: Remember My Love(craft-sensei)

Medaka Box
Kurokami Medaka, a first year, is elected as Student Council President, and the first thing she does is establish a suggestion box, later dubbed by students the “Medaka Box”. Medaka encourages students to submit any problem to the box without hesitation and promises to take on any issue from anyone. Since Medaka won the Student Council elections with a staggering 98% of the vote, she ends up as the Council’s only member. She asks her childhood friend, Hitoyoshi Zenkichi, for help and he grudgingly agrees, becoming the Student Council’s lowest ranking member. Soon Medaka recruits two more people to the Student Council, the former judo club member Akune Kouki as secretary and the current swim club member Kikaijima Mogana, on loan for 300 yen a day, as treasurer. Now the Student Council members spend their days solving the problems submitted through the Medaka Box, whether they be hooligans in clubs where they don’t belong, girls who need help writing love letters or people who’ve lost their pets, gradually earning the respect and admiration of the entire school.

Alright, so before I mention this is from GAINAX, I should point out it strikes similarities to about a dozen other shows, but for the sake of argument we’re going to narrow down to SKET Dance meets Seitokai Yakiundomo. I might be wrong, and I hope I am, because I did not like SKET Dance, but this is GAINAX, while they are known for normal anime, I have to expect something weird and edgy to happen here. Right?

Accel World
One autumn day in 2046, Haruyuki has an encounter with Kuroyukihime, the prettiest girl in his school. For the middle school boy who is often bullied, the meeting changes his life. Through a mysterious piece of software from her, Haruyuki learns of the existence of the virtual Accel World. In that moment, the lowest of the “school caste” becomes “Burst Linker”, a knight defending a princess.

It’s really hard to swallow what might be Sunrise’s next Guilty Crown, and I think the majority of us unprofessional bloggers will probably cringe before we nosedive into this show, the premise it almost set up the same. Now, I am actually enjoying GC a bit, or at least I was for awhile, so I won’t say you shouldn’t watch this, but don’t let yourselves get sucked into another Funimation trap. It ain’t worth it.

AKB0048
In the beginning of the 21st century, a world war breaks out over interplanetary travel tech. The environment is pretty much destroyed so mankind leaves Earth and starts Star Calendar 00. Entertainment and songs become heavily regulated and eventually banned due to their power to move people, but a brave idol group puts on guerrilla performances in the name of a famous act from earlier times that sang to Earth’s bitter end, AKB48. The illegal revival group’s name is… AKB0048.

Oh dear, where to begin. Satelight is going to rape you this season. Seriously.

If you aren’t familiar with the idol group AKB48, that’s fine, I’m not. VAfags on my twitterverse are going to cream into their pants and chafe their dicks every night with a garden hose over this show, and that’s okay, but unlike The idolm@ster, this show might pretend to have a story to substantiate its large important cast. So that might be good for those of you who just enjoy anime and don’t wish for a chance to bust your nuts all over Japanese women.

Questionable
Hyouka
Oreki Hotaro is a high school boy, who always acts passively. One day, he enters “Koten Bu (Classic Literature Club)” as recommended by his elder sister. There he meets Chitanda Eru, Fukube Satoshi, and Ibara Mayaka. Chitanda is a calm beautiful girl but she turns into an embodiment of curiosity once she says, “I’m interested in it (Watashi, Kininarimasu)”. Fukube is a smiling boy who excels in memory, but he never constructs his own deduction. Ibara is a short girl and is strict with others and herself. She loves Fukube, but he always dodges her approach. They begin to investigate a case that occurred 33 years ago. Hints of the mystery is buried in an old collection of works of the former members of Koten Club. The collection is titled “Hyouka”.

It’s being billed as simply “Mystery” and that interests me. Does that mean it’s going to be a light-hearted comedy with mystery elements, or are these kids going to get Hardy Boys hard-ons and Encyclopedia Brown up this bitch? Only one way to find out~

Natsuiro no Kiseki
Original anime featuring the four members of sphere as voice actresses.

Not much else to go on, but I’m going to assume this is going to be like a A Channel sort of thing.

Ozuma
In the far future, the elevated irradiation from the sun has destroyed the environment of the earth and the birthrate of humans has drastically decreased. The government controls society with an army of cloned soldiers called “Ideal Children (IC)”. Sam Coin is a trader in a desert. One day, he saves a beautiful woman Maya, who has been chased by Theseus, a corps of IC. He shelters her in his trade ship, but the destroyers of Theseus surround Sam and Maya.

It’s only six episodes, or so MAL says, and it looks interesting, but in the interest of the rest of the roster, I might tab this for the end of the season or when all of its episodes are out.

Carry-Over from Winter 2012
Moretsu Pirates
13 more episodes of pirates!

Gundam AGE
Probably by the time the season starts, we’ll be up to AGE-3 unless they extend AGE-2 beyond a half-season, we’ll see.
