Magic Defense Up

A few more new premieres, and a couple of second week episodes to get the season rolling proper. My overall impression of this season remains favorable, but it’s not quite the powderkeg it could be. Alas, get on with it.

If this isn’t magic meets Phoenix Wright, it’s dropped. No seriously. How else would you do a law show that isn’t Phoenix, Harvey Birdman, or the Chewbacca defense?

I didn’t realize there would be a Wakamoto-voiced frog and Nanoha-style legal BEFRIENDING. Animation style bothers me slightly, head sizes and proportions in some scenes, but I am interested to see where this goes.

Mahou Sensou
“Magic. It’s a disease.”
Light novel adaptations. We all know how we feel about those. But from the opening episode, it looks like it might be interesting if it doesn’t get flubbed up. Madhouse is heading this one, so that’s a thing also. But hell, I am interested to see where Isoshima’s transformation magic goes. If she isn’t using this to seduce the MC, the friend zone is the least of his worries.

Someone on MAL said this looked like Fate/Stay Night. Eh.

Space Dandy

I do like Space Dandy, but it is Johnny Bravo in Space. This makes it great, and not at the same time. The parallel air with Toonami means half of the reactions I am reading on Twitter are from ZOMG THIS IS THE BEST SHOW SINCE EVER BECAUSE IT’S THE ONLY ONE I’M WATCHING THIS SEASON. It’s not very hard for this show to hit the minimum bar it is setting. Space setting with random aliens, hot human girls, clumsy pretty-boy, and a robot or two sidekicks. Throw in the Planet of the Apes fleet and their blunders of the week catching Dandy, and you have a show. So we’re supposed to take this show on artistic merits while the meat of the show is weak at best.

But hey, it’s all good. Baby.

I don’t really need words each week for this show. It’s probably not going to change. But it will still amuse me. Because I apparently like to pretend I am back in middle school. Except my middle school sucks.

Nobunagun
“Newton’s laws are lethal.”
Gandhi and Newton make their appearances, but are quickly overshadowed by Nobunagun clearing house. The rest of the episode wasn’t nearly as interesting, but I suppose they’re setting up for the monster-of-the-week premise. I still have to say, it’s on my top-tier this season, if anything, because our female MC has very little baggage going into this. She just takes up her inner demon and starts running and gunning.
